Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in shaping body-hugging looks made him a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
Design circles laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
