NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams revealed his plan to support former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, even after months of public tension between the two Democratic figures.
Just last month, Adams had publicly condemned Cuomo, describing him as a “deceptive figure and a liar” and accusing him of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” However, in a new statement, Adams reversed course, stating he now intends to campaign alongside the former governor in areas where he holds significant backing.
“It is crucial to mobilize the communities of color that have suffered from gentrification on how critical this election is,” the mayor commented.
The mayor further explained, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise due to gentrification and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those areas and get them motivated.”
The election battle has so far been dominated by the contest between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has drawn interest worldwide and symbolized aspirations for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.
During a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa declared they would decline Adams’s endorsement if offered.
Months ago, the mayor had begun his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later dropped in exchange for his assistance with government enforcement actions across New York City.
At an separate media briefing on the same day, the mayor answered journalists inquiring into the endorsement plan by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”
This development followed a day after the two politicians were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a heated candidate debate.
