Three police officers were killed and at least 15 people sustained injuries in what appears to be intentional detonation from gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.
The explosion occurred as police and firefighters entered the house close to the Verona region to execute an eviction order for three siblings who were older adults.
Each of the three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri military police.
One male and one female got detained at the location and another man who fled after the blast was located not long after. All three have been admitted to hospital.
The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the location displayed the building reduced to a mass of wreckage.
“We are in a period of mourning,” said Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that efforts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the past.
The head of the Veneto region, the regional head, stated the property was facing an eviction order due to debts accrued by the property owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to talk with the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the residents triggered the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander the police commander informed reporters.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the detonation directly hit our personnel,” he said.
Incendiary devices were also discovered at the property, the interior minister confirmed.
Injured individuals by the blast comprised 11 other members of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a fire services member.
According to the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had was without power.
He thought the explosion had occurred on a floor above the entrance and informed the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned officers had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being turned on”.
“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants informed reporters, adding that the trio had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto joined other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three men who had died in the performance of their duties.
