Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is departing from the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a series of emails between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became public.
The economist stated in a release that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have participated, optimistic about the potential of the enterprise, and look forward observing their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who formerly headed the prestigious university, declared on recently that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
The freshly disclosed messages showed that Summers exchanged messages with Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 apprehension for accused trafficking of minors.
In a separate statement, the AI firm stated it understood Summers' choice to depart.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," OpenAI stated.
This news comes after the entire Congress of Congress agreed on recently to approve a measure that would mandate the Department of Justice to disclose its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will then move to the office of the White House for endorsement. The President has indicated he expects to sign the legislation, after reversing his view on the issue following objections from his followers.
A group of Epstein-related emails disclosed by the Congressional committee recently included multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's previous network, without indicating any criminal activity by those people.
The communications showed that Summers and the financier regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often seeking to link the official to influential world leaders.
After the messages were made available with the public, the former official expressed he took "full responsibility for my poor judgment to persist in interacting with Mr Epstein".
He added that he hoped "to reestablish faith and repair relationships with the individuals nearest to me".
The economist served in high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; functioning as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He presided over the institution from the early 2000s and is still a professor there. When stating his step-down from public roles earlier on this week, he said he would persist with his educational duties.
Following the economist's statement on Monday, the policy organization, a left-leaning policy institute in DC where he was a prominent member, confirmed that Summers was ceased to be connected with the organization.
The former official became part of the leadership of the AI company, which makes the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its chief executive Sam Altman.
