The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has indicated that he will make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections conclude.
"Yes, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," Newsom remarked when asked about contemplating a campaign for president after the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."
The governor's tenure as governor ends in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he cautioned that any choice is not imminent.
"Fate will determine that," he remarked.
The California governor has stepped forward as a high-profile critic of the current federal leadership, leveraging his online platforms and championing a proposition that would expand Democratic House seats in following GOP gerrymandering. This action has made him a target from critics.
Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom does not care about the state's residents in a recent segment on Fox News. The secretary announced a strategy to pull taxpayer dollars from California and warned suspending the power to grant trucking licenses.
"I intend to cut $160m from the state," he declared, in the wake of a recently reported deadly accident in the state involving an unauthorized trucker that caused fatalities and injured individuals.
The governor's team highlighted that the U.S. government had reauthorized the individual's authorization multiple times, which permitted him to secure a commercial driver's license under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had before stated he was withholding $40m from the state for ignoring English language requirements for truck drivers.
"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand federal law," his administration said in a recent release responding to Duffy's threats. "For now, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: The state's CDL holders had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."
A this month's survey revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters indicated that Newsom ought to campaign for the White House in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has grown to an average of 33.5% from previous levels, while his unfavorability has fallen from an average of previous highs to current figures.
Some time ago, the governor commented while visiting several swing states that he had "uncertainty" about his future for the next presidential election.
He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.
"The thought that a guy who had modest test scores, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, amazing," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I await who steps forward in the next election and who answers the call. And that is the issue for the U.S. citizens."
