Nicolas Sarkozy Set to Write Prison Memoir Detailing His 20 Days Behind Bars

Nicolas Sarkozy is preparing a memoir this autumn called Notes from a Cell, detailing the period served in jail.

The revelation came shortly after the ex-leader left prison while he contests his conviction related to unlawful coordination connected to efforts to acquire political financing provided by the regime of Muammar Gaddafi.

Prison Experience: Personal Reflections

“Behind bars there is nothing to see, and activities are scarce,” he reflects in a preview, indicating the book is more about his thoughts during isolation instead of extensive analysis of the strained and troubled jail system in France.

“Quiet is absent, which is missing at the prison, where noise is a lot to hear,” he states. “The din persists relentlessly. However, akin to empty spaces, one’s inner world grows stronger behind bars.”

Freedom Plea: Describing the Ordeal

While appealing for release, the former leader was present by video link from his cell, depicting prison life as exhausting. He expressed in court: “I wish to commend the correctional officers, displaying remarkable compassion, and who helped make this difficult experience tolerable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“I never imagined that in my seventies, I would end up incarcerated. It’s an ordeal I must endure. I confess it’s hard, it’s very hard. It affects one all who experience it due to its intensity.”

First of Its Kind

He, who served as France’s president from 2007 to 2012, set a precedent as former head from the EU and the initial post-WWII figure from France to be incarcerated.

Ahead of his incarceration he mentioned he planned to utilize the opportunity to write a book.

Reading Material

It is not certain whether he had time to review and analyze the volumes he brought with him: a two-volume biography of Jesus and Alexandre Dumas’s novel The Count of Monte Cristo, where a wrongfully accused individual is sentenced to jail but escapes to seek vengeance.

Prison Conditions

The former leader was held in isolation due to safety concerns in a cell of about nine sq metres featuring a personal bathroom at La Santé prison located in the capital. Guards were stationed in an adjacent room.

Reports indicated his diet consisted solely dairy snacks in prison worried that prison cuisine might have been spat on. Although he had access to prepare his own meals but refused this, based on unnamed sources. Unclear remains if the memoir includes his dietary choices.

Defense Viewpoint

His attorney, who visited his client each day during the incarceration, informed the court he would be safer out of prison compared to inside. “There were threats against his life, listened to yells during nighttime and emergency responses in an adjacent room during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Charges and Sentence

His incarceration began on 21 October after a French court imposed five years in prison for criminal conspiracy in connection with efforts to secure election financing for his presidential bid.

He disputes the charges and is contesting the ruling, and a fresh trial is scheduled for early next year.
