Police Compelled to Reveal Ethnic Background of Suspects to Counter Extremist Rumors

According to a former high-ranking official from the UK's largest police force, law enforcement are increasingly pressured to disclose the racial identities of suspects in response to a rise in extremist conjecture on online networks.

On Sunday morning, UK rail authorities reported the arrest of two individuals following a mass stabbing aboard a train in Cambridgeshire. An individual, a British citizen of black heritage aged 32, and another, a 35-year-old of Caribbean descent, were initially held. Later, the 35-year-old was freed with no charges, and police confirmed he had no connection in the incident.

New Guidance to Fight False Claims

In August, new guidelines were rolled out to address the spread of misinformation on digital platforms, which had intensified after the tragic murder of young students in Southport previously.

Yet, advocates warned that this approach could unintentionally encourage an overemphasis on the racial background of those accused and fuel further extremist narratives when details are not shared with the general population.

Expert Opinion

Dal Babu, who worked in the UK's largest police force, labeled the requirement for police to reveal the ethnicity of individuals in incidents involving people of colour as an "unintended consequence".

“When the new guidance was issued, I warned that there was a danger that there will be an expectation for police to release information on every single occasion,” he said.

He expressed sympathy for his former colleagues in the force, explaining that they are “in a no-win situation”. “They are under pressure because there is such intense speculation from the far right on social media after every major incident about the background of suspects.”

Response from Officials

A Conservative MP, whose constituency includes Huntingdon, called it “sad” but necessary for police to swiftly release the ethnicities of those detained.

“I don’t like it. I understand why they do it. I think they actually have to do it now,” he commented, stating that social media are leveraged to advance narratives, making it vital for police to provide accurate information to address speculation.

Extremist Manipulation of Events

Prior to the official disclosure, conservative figures had demanded a faster response. As an example, the shadow home secretary pushed for timely release of identity details, while Nigel Farage posted on X that the people should be informed “without delay”.

Moreover, far-right social media accounts sought to manipulate the incident. A profile named “British Patriot”—with nearly 5,000 followers—circulated an baseless allegation that a knife-wielding man had been shouting “Allahu Akbar”.

Ongoing Suspicion

Even after police confirmed that the arrested individuals were UK citizens, certain figures continued to insinuate that information was being withheld. Ben Habib claimed it was “hard to believe” that the attack was unrelated to terrorism, despite official statements to the opposite.

Guidance Background

The guidance were developed by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) in acknowledgment of “growing public anxiety” and to ensure police processes were “fit for purpose in an age of rapid information spread”.

The initiative came soon after a political party accused authorities of concealing the details and migrant background of two men accused in a separate case in a UK county.

Earlier this year, when a vehicle drove into spectators marking a football victory, local authorities disclosed that the suspect was a white UK national to dispels myths of a terrorist attack by an Asian man.

The NPCC emphasized that decisions on disclosing these details would be made by individual police forces, taking into account wider legal and ethical considerations. Verifying a suspect’s immigration status would be handled by the Home Office, not police.
