During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
