Israelis have come together throughout the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-led assault on October 7th, 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.

The assault resulted in more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are considered trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The bloodthirsty enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.

He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".

Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still took place around the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast throughout Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a silent tribute was held around the country.

Negotiation Talks in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations met in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the conditions of the agreement.

A high-ranking delegate involved in the negotiations said that an late session of indirect talks began at 7 PM local time.

The representative stated the earlier meeting concluded without tangible results, because of disagreements over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not resume combat after the opening period of the agreement.

He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have yet to deliver any major advancement," but noted that mediators are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the both parties.

Critical Points in Talks

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The swap of the hostages still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance provision
  • Future governance of the region

Public Feeling

In Tel Aviv's public square that day, young a woman - whose brother lived through the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were lost their lives and many more were captured by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No location feels like home now and until all the hostages are released not a single person will feel safe."

"After we see all home once more, we can breathe once more. Then we can start to heal," she continued.

Outside the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their backing for the relatives of the captives. Israel says forty-eight continue in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be surviving.

Demonstrator a participant explained: "We need do any agreement required for the abducted to be released. But we truly desire assurances that we will be protected."

Surveys now regularly indicate that about the majority of the population prefer the war to end in as payment for the liberation of the captives.

Gaza Situation

At the site of the gathering, grieving people gathered to honor the dead.

From there, the boom of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers said the intense Israeli shelling continued.

In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the dawn of that day in the west side district, sector and zone districts and in the eastern area of the community, as well the settlement to the northwest.

"Once the night falls, the anxiety arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli air strike last year, described.

"We are afraid of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my little child who rests his head on me throughout the night."

"Every second we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the conflict will come back to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

The medical facility in Gaza City said it had accepted the bodies of six people by the daytime, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part district.

Another medical facility in the southern city of the city indicated another two victims had been delivered. An individual was lost his life by Israeli troops while attempting to get assistance to the south, medics stated.
