Ultra-Conservative Ex- Congressman José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile's Next Leader.

After a definitive runoff election, hardline candidate José Antonio Kast has won the presidential office in Chile.

A Commanding Triumph

After more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having earlier been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Platform Centered On Security and Immigration

Recognized for his strong socially conservative views and admiration for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was mostly centered on promises to combat rising insecurity and significantly restrict migration.

Ruling Lacking a Clear Majority

Despite his decisive popular vote triumph, Kast will not have an clear majority in Congress, neither in the lower house nor the Senate, even if all conservative parties are counted together.

This legislative situation may complicate his policy goals, including a vow to reduce public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has not detailed a clear explanation.

"We have many things about what a Kast government will be that remain unclear because he has not detailed the way he will do them," noted a political science analyst.

The analyst added, "In terms of the economy, it is almost certain we will see austerity policies common for the right. But where there is far less uncertainty is on security policy, because that has been his flagship issue across the race."
