A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in Melbourne.

Historic Return to the Australian Courts

The event organizers confirmed on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had previously revealed in November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a special entry, a fortnight prior to the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, just before the action begins at the main venue.

Her last appearance in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in the country and looking forward to playing during the summer season," Williams stated. "I’ve had so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m thankful for the chance to return to a venue that has been so significant to my professional journey."

The tournament pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the record formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the first round at the venue in 2015.
