Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
